Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2011

Those of you who’ve read this blog for awhile know that every year about this time I participate in the Alzheimer’s Association “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” (formerly called “Memory Walk”).  This year is no different and I’ll be walking in the Manchester Iowa event on October 8th.  If you would like to find a “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” near you in Iowa check here.

The walks raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association which bills itself as “the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research.”  Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable, degenerative brain disease.  An early symptom is short-term memory loss, but eventually it leads to severe confusion, loss of linguistic abilities, and ultimately death.  It is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and its toll is raising.

If you’ve read the blog for awhile you’ll probably also know that I have a personal interest in Alzheimer’s disease.  My mom was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s about nine years ago at the age of 60.  Although she was able to live at home with my father most of that time, this year her condition worsened dramatically and she had to move into a nursing home.  It now appears that her time with us is growing short.

Although any cure found with current research funding that may come along will be too late for my mom, it will help somebody’s mom… or dad or brother or sister.  That’s why I’ll be walking in the event.  If anyone would like to sponsor my walk with a small contribution to this worthy cause, please click here.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who donated towards my participation in the 2010 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk.  Thanks to your generosity I was able to raise $170, and the three members of “Team Cashner” were able to raise $230 for the Alzheimer’s Association.  In total, the East Central Iowa Chapter of the Association raised over $104,000.
Although it didn’t go toward the team’s Memory Walk total, after the walk was over one member of Team Cashner received a $500 cash donation.  She turned it on World Alzheimer’s Day, September 21st, when a wealthy donor was conducting a matching challenge.  The donor matched the $500, turning it into a $1,000 donation.
Take that, Alzheimer’s Disease!

Memory Walk

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing memory loss and problems with thought and behavior.  It gets progressively worse over time and is always fatal.  There is no cure.  According to the Alzheimer’s Association, a leading nonprofit dedicated to Alzheimer’s care, support and research, Alzheimer’s disease is currently the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.  Some 5.3 million Americans are currently living with the disease, including my mom.

I’m determined to do something to help.  Once again this year I’ll be participating in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk, in Cedar Rapids on Saturday September 18th, to raise funds in the battle against the disease.  I hope that you will consider giving a donation.  No amount is too small; every little bit helps.  Last year, Team Cashner was able to raise over $500 for the Alzheimer’s Association.  With your help, I know we can do even better this year.

Only 2 Days Left!

I am determined to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. By participating in the 2009 Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®, I’m committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, care and support. I set a personal goal of raising $250 for the Alzheimer’s Association. So far I’m well over half way there. With your help I can raise even more.

Currently more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, and 78 million baby boomers are at risk – unless we find a way to change the course of the disease.

I want to do my part to fight this disease, but I need to ask for your support! Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer’s Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer’s. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.

On behalf of the millions of Americans who are living with this disease, thank you for supporting my efforts. We’re on the MOVE to end Alzheimer’s!

Iowans Walking To Beat Alzheimer’s Disease

September will once again be the time for the Alzheimer’s Association annual Memory Walk to cure Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease is a degenerative disease that attacks the brain. It is always fatal and there is no cure. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the nation’s leading group battling the disease, at least 5.3 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s. These 5.3 million people all have families dealing with the disease too, including mine.

That’s why I’m participating in the 2009 Alzheimer’s Association Cedar Rapids Iowa Memory Walk (September 26th). I hope that you can sponsor me with a tax-deductible donation to the Association. I know that times are hard, but every dollar you can contribute helps. To donate online, please CLICK HERE. (Or below the graphic to the far right.)

If you would like to participate in or volunteer to help at a Memory Walk in your area, click here for a list of events in Iowa.

Together we can beat Alzheimer’s.

Memory Walk 2008 A Success

The 2008 Alzheimer’s Association East Central Iowa Chapter Cedar Rapids Regional Memory Walk was a success! Held Saturday September 20th at Harding Middle School and Noelridge Park in Cedar Rapids, the Memory Walk campaign raised over $235,000. That is the chapter’s most successful Memory Walk yet.

If you missed out on the walk, but would still like to help a worthy cause, you can donate online to the various Iowa chapters:

Walking Against Alzheimer’s Disease In Iowa

About 5 million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive and fatal brain disease that most often affects people over 65, including my mom. Alzheimer’s disease attacks the brain, causing loss of memory and the ability to perform day-to-day tasks. It is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in this country. As the baby-boomers age, the number of people with Alzheimer’s is sure to rise to epidemic proportions. There is no cure… yet.

That’s where the Alzheimer’s Association comes in. The Association bills itself as “the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research.” Their goal is to eliminate Alzheimer’s through research while also providing care and support for all affected individuals and families. Their primary fundraising activity is their yearly “Memory Walk.”

During the Memory Walk, supporters in over 600 communities participate in a 2-3 mile walk in exchange for donations to the Association. Participants may register online. Here’s a list of Memory Walk dates and locations here in Iowa:
